Resource Guide

The organizations, programs and support that helped Tina and her family. Nothing here is behind a form - if it is useful to you, take it.

The following is a list of resources that I found to be very helpful during my journey. I was able to reach out and gather information, support and gain knowledge that supported myself and my family.

Please note that these resources are not intended to be in place of any medical advice, as I am not a physician. I encourage you to talk with your health care providers, surgeons and navigators, ask questions, and write things down.

I highly recommend getting connected to community programs, support groups and organizations that can offer support. There are many resources locally, and there is a wealth of information available online.

Mental health support

When dealing with a medical diagnosis, it is beneficial to connect with mental health support through activities like support groups and individual counseling, in person and/or virtually. As each person’s insurance can vary, it is recommended to first check with your health plan, your medical group, and online platforms.

Important: some groups and therapies may have a copay, a fee, or are on a private-pay basis. Inquire about cost, the number of available sessions, and the length of care needed.

The one thing I can share about going through this cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery is that it can bring up unresolved issues. With this in mind, it is all the more reason to get therapeutic support initiated earlier on rather than waiting for a crisis to occur. It takes time to register with a new platform or service, and there may be limited slots available.

Mind and body

To seek balance when there is disharmony with health, it was helpful for me to be in nature. When I could, I would go for nature walks to spend time with trees. Things like painting, drawing and writing can help capture feelings. Reading, meditation and prayer. Music was essential for me. Therapy was a true lifeline. Having the ability to get fear, frustration and pain out is so important. Talk therapy got me through. Believe me, it was not easy and it did bring up issues from the past. However, to move forward, we need to understand the past.
